| Anadromous Fish Conservation Act Grant Program Projects NOAA administers several grant programs to further restoration efforts in the Klamath River basin. During 2000-2006, NOAA Fisheries Service issued relatively large grants to the States of California and Oregon, and Klamath basin tribes (Yurok, Karuk, Hoopa and Klamath), through the Pacific Coast Salmon Recovery Fund (PCSRF) for the purposes of restoring coastal salmonid habitat. The States integrate these funds with their state salmon restoration funds and issue grants for habitat restoration, watershed planning, salmon enhancement, research and monitoring, and outreach and education. The Federal funds provided through the PCSRF have been instrumental in furthering conservation efforts in the Klamath River basin. These funds have been successfully used to leverage additional state and local salmon recovery dollars and have lead to a substantial increase in overall funding in the basin. Recent reductions in state salmon grant funding has elevated the importance of NOAA Fisheries Services PCSRF in California in 2006. Since 1996, the NOAA Restoration Center has provided over $250,000 in small grants funding for fish passage improvement projects in the lower Klamath Basin. NOAA Fisheries Service has also executed several interagency agreements with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Bureau of Indian Affairs to facilitate collection of salmon habitat utilization data and physical parameters on the Klamath River during the past several years. In addition, NOAA Fisheries Service provided grants to the Yurok Tribe in the late 1990's to investigate the impact of sea lion predation on salmon and steelhead populations in the lower Klamath Basin. Also, under the authority of the Anadromous Fisheries Act, a grant is provided to California to help fund lower Klamath creel surveys to support fall Chinook harvest projections and Californias steelhead recreational harvest management in the lower Klamath basin. NOAA Fisheries Service is responsible for the management and distribution of grants made available through the PCSRF. The Protected Resources Division and the Restoration Center Provide feedback to the states as to priorities of the grant project proposals. Sustainable Fisheries then provides management of the grant funding. In 2006, NOAA Fisheries Service received proposals for project funding from the Klamath River Inter-Tribal Fish & Water Commission. Summaries of the funded project proposals can be found organized by tribal reservation in the following links. |
